A rat borne infection has been treated more successfully with homeopathy than with any other form of medicine in the biggest homeopathic study of its kind ever undertaken.
The outbreak of Leptospiroisis in Cuba was treated by the State with 10 million doses of a homeopathic remedy and the areas where this remedy was used showed an 80 per cent drop in the number of reported cases of the infection. The results of the study were presented to a conference on homeoprophylaxis in Cuba attended by Tony Pinkus of Ainsworth's Homeopathic Pharmacy in the U.K. who has reported back on the results.
Largest study of its kindThe multi-centre study o the prophylaxis of Leptospirosis primarily with homeopathy is the largest of its kind ever carried out.
Symptoms of the disease include fever, headache, chills, nausea and vomiting, eye inflammation, and muscle aches. In more severe cases, the illness can result in liver damage and jaundice , kidney failure, and internal bleeding. People who are seriously ill with leptospirosis often need to be hospitalised. The infection follows the hurrican season where rats carry the infection in flooded areas.
The Cuban State run Carlos J Finlay vaccine institute, which hosted the conference, dispensed 773 doses of the conventional vaccine, which is had been producing for many years. But in Aug 2007, Finlay put approximately five million people in 2 provinces on homoepathic nosode prophylaxis at the cost of about only US$ 200,000. That figure represents the entire population of the 2 provinces. The prophylaxis consisted of 2 single doses about 2 weeks apart. Included in the dose was the Lepto nosode + some Bach flower remedies to address the mental distress of the disaster situation. Further infection stopped within two weeksWithin 2 weeks the rising incidence of the infection dropped to almost zero infections and zero deaths from leptospirosis and in 2008 no deaths were reported and infections ran at less than 10 a month. In addition, in the past two years, the same institute nearly five million doses a year of a homeopathic remedy made from the vaccine.
80 per cent decline
Results were compared year on year between 2004 and 2008 (although records go back to 1990). The dramatic 80pc decline in reported cases of the disease to levels below that of less flooded provinces was considered highly significant.
The work was conducted by a large co-operative team, headed by the vaccine institute, universities, practitioners, doctors and state provincial health care agencies. Director of the vaccine institute Conceptione Campa, whose husband is an executive at the Ministry of Health, was key to the programme. Because the same institute manufactured both the conventional and the homeopathic solutions, they have exact production, labour and time costs for both. Details of the ground breaking research are due to be submitted for publication this year.
Other projects discussed at the conference included homeoprophylaxis in the Third World for Malaria, Chaggas, disease, TB, Hepatitis and haemorrhagic conjunctivitis as well as a host of veterinary studies in Cuba, Brazil, Italy, Honduras, Australia and Kenya.
